its on a 2000 astro van and when we try to use the air conditioner

This system is vacuum controlled. If you lose vacuum to it, the system will default to the defroster mode. You need to be checking for broken or unhooked vacuum hoses and connections. If I remember correctly on yours the hose plugs into the rear part of the intake manifold. If the engine cover has been off recently, it is real e-z to knock off a hose when putting the cover back on. If you can't find a vacuum problem there is a possibility that you have a problem with a mode door control actuator (vacuum) or the control panel. But broken vacuum connections are the problem 95% of the time. Thanks
