When I let off the gas in my 1996 Chevy G20 Van while driving, the engine diesels(sounds like it is going to die) then idles normally. From a stop, in Drive, when I press on the accelerator, the engine lurches then accelerates normally. What's the deal?

Optional Information:
1996 Chevrolet G20 V8

Already Tried:
Swearing, yelling and hitting the dashboard

Reply to Bill's Post: No problems with the basic setup. It's not misfiring either. No check engine light.
