Is the only time that it blows smoke is on initial start up? Does the smoke have a slight blue cast to it?

The most common cause of a quick puff of smoke at start up is leaking valve guides. When the engine is turned off and starts to cool they will allow oil to trickle into the cylinder and then when you start the vehicle up the oil will burn and blow out. The main thing you need to see is whether or not the smoke is pure white or if it has a slight blue cast to it. If it is the oil problem then the blue cast will occur. If the smoke is pure white you may be burning coolant from someplace. Has either your coolant or oil seemed to get a little bit low?

Reply to BOBBY's Post: no just the oil.yesterday when i started the van i drove to work it made a loud pinging noise and was losing power and blowing smoke out.i said the hell with it and gave it the gas.it made a noise like a valve was sticking and seemed to what i think seated it s self and stopped.i think its a lifter sticking and leaving a valve open and letting oil down to the cylinder.isnt there something i can add to the oil to unstick lifters.untill i can have it looked at.can i suck a valve if there is a lifter sticking?
