Question

1982 Ford E150 302V8 No Start Problem

Sent to Car Experts August 16, 2006 10:07 a.m.

HI, I have a 1982 Ford E-150 van (302V8) which had a hard starting problem. Seemed it would only start after 3 minutes of cranking, then when I decided to give the battery a break, and let the switch go to the run position, it would fire. Now it's totally dead. No spark. Someone said change the starter solenoid which I did, no change. Then I got out the repair manual, and followed the electrical no start procedures. Got to checking the ohms between the red wire going to the duro-spark module, and the "bat" terminal of the coil, should be between .8 and 1.6 ohms. I had infinity. Manual said to change the "ballast resistor". Only problem it didn't say where it was located. It's not on the firewall, so I guess it's under the dash after the ignition switch. I don't know what it looks like. Help!

This vehicle does not actually have a ballast resistor. It has a resistor wire that does the same thing exept makes it harder to replace. The wire comes off of the ignition switch. Here is a picture and a wiring diagram. You can buy a universal ballast resistor from NAPA that will replace the resistor wire. You will need to use normal wire to go from the switch to the resistor and then to the coil. The part number is SME 185450 and the price is around $15.00.
