Question

My 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan AC is making

Sent to Car Experts August 06, 2006 9:48 a.m.

My 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan AC is making a ticking sound when on, also it is not cooling when at a stop. The AC does cool, or feels like it is cooling, when driving. Does it need a charge or is the compressor faulting?

Optional Information:
2003 Dodge Grand Caravan V6 3.8L

Already Tried:
nothing, do need to change the AC Filter

You may have a low charge in the system, one of the symptoms is the compresser kicking on and off with a clicking noise,is this what your van is doing?

The Clicking/Ticking sounds constant. It may also kick on and off, haven't really noticed. We only here it during very low speed driving or stopped (with windows down). Can't here it while driving due to the notorius wind noise. We just came off a 1500 mile driving vacation and noticed the noise when we got home. Van has 109000 miles.

I have an AC Gage to fill the AC which reads upto 200 psi (Green =0-25, blue=25-45, yellow=45-65, and red=765-200). Will this do?

The gage will tell us if the freon is low,but to accurately diagnose the problem we will need to look at both the high and low side of the system, but the gage you have we will be able to take a good guess.Put the gage on the low side(it's the only one it will fit) and get back with me on what it reads

Don't want to make asumptions, but with the AC at full blast? and lowest temp, or 70°F OK.

Gage read 75° in the red, with the temp on 68° and full blast. Clicking sound was there only with the ac on.

There are several things that thing that could cause this, you will need to have a set of manifold gages to accurately diagnose the system, suggest that you take the car to a good mechanic, without the info that the gages supply it's impossible to diagnose this problem.Obviously there is a flow of freon problem,it may be the compresser, expansion valve, plugged condensor, plugged accumulator,or something as simple as a low freon charge
