I HAVE A 1984 CHEVY VAN WITH ABOUT 220000 MILES ON IT.

Sent to Car Experts July 28, 2006 5:41 p.m.

I HAVE A 1984 CHEVY VAN WITH ABOUT 220000 MILES ON IT. IT HAS SUDDENLY BEGUN TO BACKFIRE AND WILL NOT IDLE SMOOTHLY. INSTEAD IT MUST BE GIVEN A SLIGHT AMOUNT OF ACCELERATOR AND IT STILL VARIES IN ITS IDLE SPEED FROM NEARLY DYING TO ABOUT 1500 RPM IN A VERY STEADY PATTERN. WITHOUT THE ACCELERATOR IT WILL DIE. I HAVE REPLACED THE FFUEL PUMPAND A BROKEN VACUUM CONTROL VALVE ON THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING. WHAT SHOULD I TRY NEXT?

Optional Information:
1984 Chevrolet G20VAN 5.0L

Already Tried:
NEW FUEL PUMP AND NEW VACUUM CONTROL VALVE(IT WAS PHYSICALLY BROKEN)

Relist: I still need help.
I HAVE NOT ACCEPTED GENE'S ANSWER BECAUSE IT SEEMS TO ME TO BE INCOMPLETE. HIS ANSWER ADDRESSES THE SURGING AND THE NON-IDLE BUT IT DOES NOT ADDRESS THE BACKFIRE WHEN I LET UP ON THE ACCELERATOR. I LOOK FORWARD TO HIS ADDITIONAL RESPONSE.
