1990 chevy full size van v8 5.7.   When the AC is turned on the van heats up and stalls then when the van is cool it will start again. If you don't run the AC it Rruns fine. The garage has replaced the Battery and the Alternator with no success.... HELP!
Any ideas?
Thank You

What kind of cooling fan/s do you have...electric or centrifugal?

OK, well the added heat generated by the condenser unit (A/C cooler, looks like another radiator) is too much for the fan because the fan is not cooling properly....which means you need a new fan clutch. (about $50) The are two kinds used, one is centrifugal...one is thermal.(thermal has a coil in the front, centrifugal is flat in the front) So take the fan and clutch off, then take the fan off the clutch and take the clutch to the parts place with you.

Reply to Wydranator's Post: Hey I just talk with my fater who's van it is and he said the it doesn't over heat I miss under stood something he said to me. He re-explained to me that the AC will run for about 30 to 45 minutes then stall the temp gauge does not change and after 15 minutes the van will restart also going up a big hill with the AC on will cause it to happen much sooner if not on the hill. The garage replaced the Starter and alternator and are stuck there.

Sorry about the miss info take your time I Appreciate your expert help this is really cool. thank you,
John

OK, that makes a difference. Does the van have front and rear A/C?

Well, with the additional amperage needed for the additional A/C unit, the alternator probably is not the right one for your van, and therefore does not put out enough amperage.

Do you have any kind of meter that car read voltage at the battery?

Reply to Wydranator's Post: So I should run the van with both ac units on and take my Multimeter and check the voltage while it's running or when it stalls? What should I see?

While running! Watch the gauge...if it keeps dropping and drops below 12.5 volts, you need a higher amperage alternator (Probably a 100 amp) It will probably stall around 12 or below because the electrical system needs at least 12v to run.

Listen, gotta go right now but send me your results and I will get back to you later OK?
