Question

On my 1996 Chrysler Town and Country van the ABS

Sent to Car Experts March 18, 2006 9:24 p.m.

On my 1996 Chrysler Town and Country van the ABS warning light comes on occasionally and then other times it seems like the front brakes are not stopping the van with full efficiency. I am wondering if maybe the caliper is sticking or could the brake system need to be bled???

Optional Information:

REPLIED Check Mark

When has your brake pads been replaced? They should have been by now. You can check and see if they are worn by looking with a flash light into the brake windows that are on the front calipers. This ABS lite might come on if the unit is dirty. a good cleaning with brake cleaner could fix this up. You will have to remove the tires on the front in order to do this correctly.

The brakes have been inspected and I was told that there are plenty of pads left and that everything looked good. They saw no reason for abs light coming on or for any problems with the brakes. They told me that I would have to take the van to a Chrysler dealer to have a computer code checked for the ABS system.

The pads are fine so that is not the problem

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Modern antilock brakes are far more reliable and less likely to need repair than the older systems. Most common is dirt getting into the sensors, which activates the ABS light and shuts down the system. When this happened on our 100,000 mile Neon we examined and tried to clean each sensor. We ended up having the system checked with a code-checker to find out which sensor was not working, and took it out and cleaned it - which worked once we reset the computer (by the unplug-the-battery method).
