Hello!

I assume from the parts you have replaced so far that the symptom you are experiencing is that the starter is not operating? No sound at all from the engine compartment when the key is turned?

Hello!

you never answered the information request i posted for you.

We need an exact description of the symptoms to be able to begin to help you.

(1) Is the symptom you are experiencing that the starter is not turning the engine over, or is it cranking over OK, but will not start? Different symptoms, vastly different diagnostic procedures required, your description "does not restart" is is not very descriptive of the symptoms.

Any clarification or better description of the problem that you could provide might be helpful...

OK, now we're getting someplace! <smile> The description as I read it, is that the starter does not operate when you turn the key, but if you jump across the starter terminals it operates.... if I have it wrong, please feel free to correct me.

If this is the case, then there is probably no power getting to the small terminal on the starter solenoid from the relay.

Here is a wiring schematic of the system to help you:

As you can see, power passes from the ignition switch, to the neutral safety switch, to the relay, which then closes and applies power to the starter solenoid. The most likely point of failure, since you have replaced everything else, is the neutral safety switch on the transmission. I would suggest taking a test light and following the wiring, to see where the power in the circuit is being lost... that will be the location of the fault.

Neutral switch operation and location appears to be different depending on whether you have the 3 speed or 4 speed transmission; both were available in that model.

to give you the location of the neutraal switch, I neeed to know if you have the 3 speed transmission or the 4 speed transmission; they are different and the switch is different depending on which one you have. the 4 speed transmission will have a large electrical connector with about a dozen wires attached connected to it on the front towards the radiator, just above the transmission pan, below where the cooler hoses attach. the 3 speed is a purely mechanical unit and will have no large electrical plug attached.

Park/Neutral Starting And Back-Up Lamp Switch

Replacement And Test

  1. To test switch, remove wiring connector from switch and test for continuity between center pin of switch and transaxle case. Continuity should exist only when transaxle is in Park or Neutral.
  2. Check gearshift cable adjustment before replacing a switch which tests bad.
  3. Unscrew switch from transaxle case allowing fluid to drain into a container. Move selector lever to Park and then to Neutral positions, and inspect to see that the switch operating lever fingers are centered in switch opening in the case.
  4. Screw the switch, with a new seal, into transaxle case and tighten to 33 Nm (24 ft. lbs. ). Retest switch with the test lamp.
  5. Add fluid to transaxle to bring up to proper level.
  6. The back-up lamp switch circuit is through the two outside terminals of the 3-terminal switch.
  7. To test switch, remove wiring connector from switch and test for continuity between the two outside pins.
  8. Continuity should exist only with transaxle in Reverse position.
  9. No continuity should exist from either pin to the case
