I have a 1986 chevy van, with a small V8. The problem is, when the engine warms up it will all of a sudden start spitting and sputtering till it sometimes dies out. When it does die out it won't start again for a while. I've noticed that when the weather is very cold it runs much better. The distibutor and plug wires seem fairly new. Moisture does'nt seem to play a part either.I'd really appreciate any help I can get. The vehicle has about 150,000 miles on it.

Optional Information:
1986 Chevrolet chevy window va 305

Already Tried:
new filters and cleaning carb and choke

See if you can get a timing light on it! If it is erratic you probably have worn timing components. The timing is advanced during the cold start and when it adjusts as the engine warms it may be sloppy. If it is not a timing issue then you may still have a bad gummy carb that needs a rebuild. Is the choke pull off working properly? are there any loose rotted missing vacuum lines is the PCV plugged? these are the things I would be looking at!! Sound like the engine may be flooding out. Pull a spark plug out and see if it is wet or carbon fouled. Good luck let me know what you find.
