my automatic transmission shifts from overdrive to the next gear while driving long periods of time, the van is a 1994 ford aerostar with a 3.8 motor. whats wrong and what may need to be done about it.

it shifts down and then back again to overdrive, in a period of an hour it may happen twenty five times. I was wrong about the motor its a 3.0.
