Question

starter engine van

Sent to Car Experts September 15, 2005 12:03 p.m.

I have a 1988 G-20 van with a 5.7l engine. The starter will grind a couple of times before it engages in the flywheel. I replaced the flywheel when I replaced the transmiision. They told me that it had a 6 cylinder flywheel. The replacement was the same size as the orginal and ground also. Teeth on flywheel looks good. Any ideas to solve grinding?

How about the starter? You didn't mention changing that. The damage to the flywheel is the result of a bad starter. You need to replace both.

This is the third starter and they all have done it. I just wait until the starter is no good and then replace it. By bad, I mean the solenoid won't work.

Maybe it's the quality of the starters you are buying. The quality can really vary from one to another. The starter and flywheel really should be changed together. A bad starter will ruin a flywheel and a bad flywheel will ruin another starter.
