96 dodge ram van water pump

Sent to Car Experts September 4 2005 at 8:11 PM

I try to replace the water pump for my 96 dodge ram van. I use a fan wrench to turn the fan drive threaded nut. I turn the nut counterclockwise but I was however unable to hold the water pump pulley stationery even though I use a screwdriver to try to wedge into the rear part of the water pump pulley. There is no pulley bolts for me to lock the screwdriver in position. Because of this, the pulley turns together with the nut and I was unable to loose the nut. I heard that there are two types of pulley. 1)bolt on pulley, and 2)press on pulley. I suspect what I have on my van is the press on pulley type. How should I get the fan nut off in this case.
Regards. Henry

There is a tool kit make to do that that has one wrench that will go around the four smaller bolts (assuming it has them). Here's what it looks like. the big one will grab the smaller bolts. If you happen to have the pressed on type, this won't worrk and move on to my next suggestion.

There is a trick I use all the time.

Get the longest chisel that you can find. Place it on the left edge of the nut and hit it sharply. That will usually break it free and it will spin off from there.

Reply to Hammer Time's Post: Thanks for your answer. Just to clarify. When you say place the chisel on the left edge of the nut, are you saying the edge where the nut touches the water pump pulley?

No, you are going to attempt to turn the nut with the chisel. Put it in a position that will turn the nut counterclockwise.

Reply to Hammer Time's Post: thanks very much. Now I am able to loosen the nut. However, now I am confronted with the next problem. How do you get the press type water pump pulley out? Do you take the entire water pump assembly out? Or do you just put a bar or a screwdrive behind the pulley and pry against the water pump to get the pulley out?

Just leave it alone. The new pump will come with one already on it.
