95 dodge conversion van 250 that backfires

Sent to Car Experts June 9 2005 at 6:40 AM

Just two weeks ago had the head gasket, radiator and cracked head replaced. Was cruising along with cruise control set at 75mph. Suddenly lost power and heard back firing first under the hood. Began foot driving at 70mph. Same thing, except backfiring out of tail pipe. Drove thru sever thunderstorm but same had happened before on a clear day. New catalitic converter and muffler less than six months old. Mechanic drove car and drives fine. Help

I would check or replace the distributor cap.It sounds like you may have moisture in there. Also check the coil and coil wire for corrosion. You could also have an ignition module breaking down.If nothing is found in this area you will need to drive the van with a mechanical oil pressure and fuel guage taped to the windshield and see if one of those is dropping prior to the backfiring. You are going to have to be patient and thorough to find the problem. This all assumes that the repairs done were done properly and the van is no longer overheating and using/burning coolant.
