You want to run a sensor check. The symptoms that you are describing most correlate to a bad crank or cam position sensor. If you run a sensor output test, it will monitor all the sensors operations and outputs. Crank and Cam sensors usually don't trigger OBD codes, they are hard to detect when they go bad therefor a sensors output test would be my suggestion in your case.

Reply to Adin3's Post: Is that a test that I can run with an aftermarket test unit or should I schedule with a shop in my area?

i would recommed you taking it to a shop. It requires a larger tester or computer to run this test. Also you will need to be able to read the output of the sensors. It's not a very expensive test, it's much cheaper than buying a computer to test it with.
