2002 chevy tahoe ls 2wd 5.3L AT makes noise like fan ...
Sent to Car Experts June 18 05:36 PM

2002 chevy tahoe LS 2wd 5.3L (Z) AT makes noise like fan hitting cover while accellerating. noise stops when you let of gas and transmission shifts. Does not do it all the time but seems to be worse on hot middle time of the day. Can drive all day without noise then it can start every time I pull off. I can feel a vibration on the passenger side floor when it starts making the noise. Car has been on lift and checked out, there is nothing loose and the engine runs good. The transmission shifts fine during this noise. If you continue to accellerate while it is making the noise it will stop after speed is stabilized. If you let up on the gas while making noise it will stop when the transmission shifts to the next gear. checked motor mounts, OK.

Optional Information:
2002 Chevrolet tahoe LS 5.3L Z code

Already Tried:
visual inspection, checked fan clutch and fan, motor mounts, shocks and belts. Had car tuned and front brake job but it was making the noise before. I have been unable to pinpoint where the noise is comming from except that it is from the front engine compartment.

Hi Customer (name blocked for privacy), You are going to need to remove the cover from under the fly wheel on the truck and look to see if there are any marks on the inside of it. There is a good possibility that one of the torque converter to flex plate bolts has backed out of its threads and is hitting the cover. I have also seen starter motors make this kind of a noise when the bendix drive spring is broken or loose and when the car moves forward the drive will actually slide far enough toward the motor that the teeth on the starter drive will hit the teeth on the flex plate and make noise, too. I'm sure it will not be an e-z one to locate because of the area it is coming from, but I have seen about as many of each of these problems, so I could not learn more toward one than the other. Let me know how you make out. Thanks, Bob
