400 turbo transmission

I have a 72 chevy chevy c10.the truck made a winding sound,but when I put it in nutral the sound goes away.today I tried to move it and it will not move in any gear.I dropped the pan the filter was loose and installed incorrectly.Also the filter is old and needs to be replaced.Should I replace the filter/fluid than try to run it again or will I be wasting my time?
