ford f150 fuel pump not working

1995 f150 6cyl dual fuel tanks, installed new fuel pump and in line filter, thinking this was the problem, but when i turn the key i don't hear the pump come on. and the engine will crank but it is not getting fuel. went throught the checks in the book but still can't figure what is going on. before i replaced the fuel pump the truck would be running and just die, then you could restart it a few minutes later.
