1995 CHEVY TRUCK STALLS WHEN EXCELLERATING
Sent to Car Experts July 24 02:17 PM

MY SON'S 1995 CHEVY 2500 TRUCK STALLS OUT WHEN YOU TRY TO EXCELERATE. IT STARTS, (SOMETIMES TAKING A 2ND OR 3RD TRY THOUGH NOW), THEN IDLES OK, AND DRIVES OK AS LONG AS YOU GENTLY INCREASE THE SPEED. IF YOU "FLOOR IT" OR JUST TRY TO EXCELERATE TO PASS IT BOGS DOWN AND STARTS TO STALL UNLESS YOU IMMEDIATELY TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF OF THE GAS. FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED (AUTOZONE) ABOUT A MONTH AGO ALONG WITH PLUGS. I READ ABOUT 55 ON FUEL PRESSURE TEST GUAGE. LOW FUEL PRESSURE? FLOW? INJECTORS? WHAT SHOULD I CHECK? THANKS,

Reply to RonRepair's Post: IT IS A 96. IT IS THE 5.7 ENGINE. I CHANGED THE FUEL FILTER. THE PRESSURE READS A STEADY 52 PSI WHILE IDLING. IT IS GETTING HARDER TO START, TAKING 2, 3 TRIES, HAD TO SPRAY STARTER FLUID IN INTAKE A COUPLE OF TIMES, NOW IT IDLES FOR A MINUTE OR TWO THEN SLOWLY SLOWS DOWN AND STALLS OUT. I STILL CAN'T INCREASE THE THROTTLE QUICKLY OR IT STALLS OUT. NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT? NO CODES? ANY THOUGHTS?

THANKS

Your fuel pressure should be 60-66 PSI, key on engine off. These systems have a problems with the plastic lines leaking. I would verify pump head pressure by hooking the gauge to the end of the supply hose and make sure the pump can create enough pressure. To check the lines, the upper intake must be removed. Check your oil, see if the level is high, and smells like gas. If you don't find a problem then let me know, we go from there.

Reply to RonRepair's Post: SORRY THIS IS DRAGGED OUT BUT I HAVE ABOUT AN HOUR EACH NIGHT AFTER WORK TO WORK ON HIS TRUCK. HE HAD THE SYMPTOM A WEEK BEFORE ON HIS DRIVE BACK TO BASE (ARMY) THEN AGAIN WHEN HE RETURNED HOME. HESITATION, BOGGING DOWN WHEN EXCELLERATING AWAY FROM TOLL BOOTHS, HE MADE IT 500 MILES UNTIL IT GOT WORSE AND STALLED OUT, HAD TO FEATHER THE THROTTLE WHEN EXCELLERATING TO GET IT HOME. YESTERDAY, AGAIN CHECKED FUEL PRESSURE AT SCHRADER TEST VALVE IS 50 TO 52 PSI AT IT'S HIGHEST, KEY ON / ENGINE OFF, IDLING, OR THROTTLED UP... STARTED TO SET UP TO TEST PUMP OUTPUT PRESSURE DIRECTLY. DECIDED THAT SINCE THE PUMP (THAT I CHANGED 6 MONTHS AGO) IS UNDER WARRANTLY (AUTOZONE) AND SINCE THE FUEL LEVEL SENDING UNIT ISN'T WORKING THAT I'D DROP THE TANK AND INSTALL NEW FUEL PUMP / SENDING UNIT, AND BE SURE OF PUMP OUTPUT PRESSURE. I GOT A NEW FUEL PUMP BUT NEED TO GET PICK UP SENDING UNIT TODAY AND INSTALL BOTH THIS EVENING. TO SAVE OUR TIME AND E-MAILS, IF AFTER INSTALLING A NEW PUMP I HAVE 60+ PSI ON TEST GUAGE BUT THE SYMPTOM IS STILL THE SAME, (STALLS WHEN EXCELLERATING) WHAT WOULD BE THE NEXT MOVE. (HOPEFULY IF I HAVE 60+ PSI IT RUNS FINE AND I SAY THANK YOU AND HIT THE ACCEPT BUTTON.

THANKS,

I'd be more concerned that the pressure was still low due to a leak. So check and make sure that the pressure does not leak down after you turn the key off. Check if your oil level is high and smells gassy.

The next step would be to check codes. If the check engine light is on now (it should be), see what codes you have, then erase them. Then test drive and see if it turns the light back on. If it does recheck codes. Try to find out whether there is a random misfire or it can be isolated to specific cylinders. If the problem is in a certain cylinder(s), then check (ignition, compression, fuel mixture to that/those cylinders. If it's random, I'd start by scanning the engine control, and look for a problem there.

Autozone may have a code reader to check and erase codes.

Reply to RonRepair's Post: YESTERDAY WHEN I WAS RECHECKING THE FUEL PRESSURE, BEFORE I DECIDED TO GO AHEAD AND CHANGE THE PUMP I SPECIFICALY LOOKED FOR THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. IT ILLUMINATES ONLY WHEN I TURNTHE KEY ON (BULB CHECK) THEN GOES OUT WITH THE REST WHENTHE ENGINE STARTED. I HAD HOPED THAT THERE WAS A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT SO THAT I WOULD HAVE A CODE TO WORK WITH? I WILL FOLLOW UP WITH THE PRESSURE LEAK IDEA AFTER I CHANGE THE PUMP (IF THE PROBLEM CONTINUES) UP UNTIL NOW WHEN I WOULD TURNTHE KEY ON, THE PUMP WOULD RUN FOR A MINUTE, PRESSURE WOULD GO TO 52, THEN PUMP WOULD STOP (IF I DIDN'T START ENGINE) AND PRESSURE WOULD QUICKLY DROP TO UNDER 20 PSI ON THE GUAGE? SHOULD IT HAVE HELD PRESSURE AFTER THE KEY WAS A SHUT OFF OR WHEN THE PUMP STOPPED DUE TO ME NOT STARTING THE ENGINE?

Yes it should have held pressure. So it's either leaking back into the tank or into the manifold.

If its a 96 it should be OBDII, and leaving misfire codes at the the very least. You might check with your son and see if the light was flashing.

But whatever the case. the fuel pressure problems need to be corrected before anything else.

Reply to RonRepair's Post: I CHANGED THE FUEL PUMP AND FUEL LEVEL SENDING UNIT (HIS GAS LEVEL SENDING UNIT HASN'T WORKED SINCE 1ST FUEL PUMP WAS CHANGED) AND THE TRUCK STARTED AFTER THE FOURTH TRY. SINCE THEN IT SOUNDS, RUNS, ACTS FINE, EXCELLERATES OK, EVERYTHING DRIVING NORMAL. I DID PUT MY PRESSURE GUAGE BACK ON AND EVEN THOUGH EVERYTHING RUNS FINE NOW IT STILL READ 52PSI WHEN IDLING, AND SPIKES UP TO 60+ PSI WHEN REVING THE ENGINE. WHEN I JUST TURN ON THE KEY IT PRESSURIZES BUT THEN LOOSES PRESSURE QUICKLY WHEN THE PUMP SHUTS OFF. SO... I'M STILL CONCERNED ABOUT THE PRESSURE LOSS AND I'M GOING TO TRY TO DEAD-HEAD THE PUMP BY MOMENTARILY PINCHING OFF THE RETURN AS SUGGESTED, I'M ALSO GOING TO GET A NEW PRESSURE GUAGE, I COULD HAVE A CHEAP GUAGE THATS INACCURATE OR LEAKING AND CONFUSING MY TROUBLESHOOTING. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP, EVEN THOUGH I MAY STILL HAVE AN ISSUE WITH LOOSING PRESSURE DUE TO A LEAK OR PRESURE REGULATOR PROBLEM YOU'VE GIVEN ME ENOUGH INFORMATION TO GO ON FROM HERE AND FOR NOW THE TRUCK IS RUNNING. NOW I CAN WORK ON MY DAUGHTERS 2000 BLAZER, (DON'T HAVE FIVE KIDS, THEY ALL EVENTUALLY DRIVE CARS AND BRING THEM TO YOU WHEN THEY ACT UP) IRONICALLY THE BLAZER IS STARTING TO SHOW THE SAME SYMPTOMS, NOT WANTING TO EXCELERATE AND STALLING EXPECIALLY WHEN IT'S HOT OUT, UNTIL IT SITS FOR A WHILE, THEN IT DECIDES TO RUN OK AGAIN FOR A WEEK OR TWO. ANYWAY.... THANKS, I'LL HIT ACCEPT FOR YOUR HELP WITH THE TRUCK AND I MAY SOON BE POSTING QUESTIONS ABOUT MY DAUGHTERS BLAZER. SORRY I COULDN'T AFFORD MORE FOR THE SERVICE, IT'S WORTH IT, BUT FIVE KIDS WILL DO THAT TO YOU.

THANKS AGAIN,   CHUCK
