Question

Please don't tell me it's a sensor

Sent to Car Experts July 10, 2006 3:50 p.m.

got in my 2002 ram 1500 4x4 quad cab truck this morning and started it, all my lights stayed on ( abs, emer, ch. engin, air bag), and the mph guage did not work. at lunch my truch would die, every time i stopped or put the clutch in and let the tack. go below 1000rpms. my truck started back good every time, but would die evey time.
thanks
john

I have seen this problem a couple of times. Both times it was battery or alternator related. Eventhough the vehicle would crank and start there wasn't enough energy to run the system. I would check both of these first and go from there. Let me know.

yes it does idle, even took the + cable off, idles good, truck dies when driveing slowing down to a stop, or when i push the clutch in to change gears, if i leave the clutch in to long the tack keeps falling to zero. even in 3rd or 4th, but if i change fast enough it wont stall

When was the last time you did a tune-up on this vehicle? Check to see if your distributor cap and rotor are in good shape and are not loose.

Check and make sure everything is tight. It sounds as if your timing may be off and any loose parts will cause this.

Okay, sorry I keep forgetting that your system has no distributor. Under your hood look at the emissions routing picture. See if you find something on there called the MAP sensor.

I know, I know. What that sensor does is detect manifold vacuum. It helps the computer determine the state of acceleration and deceleration along with the Throttle Position Sensor. If you can locate the MAP we can do a quick check on it. By the way has your check engine light come on at all?

If you would like to wait until tommorrow we can continue. If you have time I would take your truck to your local Autozone and have the computer scanned for codes. Most places do this for free. Let me know what you decide to do.

All they will be able to tell you is what the code is and what it is related to. The code may or may not give you your answer, but once we have that, we can go from there.
