99 ford ranger no reverse.?

neghbor want s to sell his 99 ranger with 165.000 miles on 4 cylinder engine , says the truck has no reverse , but runs great in other forward gears. asking $500.00, body look good a few scratches but over all nice. how about this tranny problem , is there a costly issue. waiting in the wings.

To fix this problem the transmission will have to be removed and rebuilt. The clutches or the plate seal in the reverse drum are worn and allowing fluid to by-pass them. This is the most common problem with no reverse.
