1996 GMC Sierra C1500 5.7l w/5 speed manual tran. 147K miles
Current:
1/2 tank gas, Fuel pressure 62psi
New ignition coil
Problem:
Crank turns but does not fire, acts like it wants to fire a little (acts like it's wet). The problem first occured the day after heavy rains in Dallas. I left town for a week and upon my return, the engine started without a hitch for 6 days; however, I experienced some intermittent but infrequent "hick-up's" while driving during this period. I changed the ignition coil and have been able to start the engine only once since.
I am pretty confident that my problem is in the ignition system somewhere but can not identify the source.
My Ignition and Sparkplug cables do not have carbon marks. Distributor cap, rotor, wires and fuel filter are less than 18 months old. The distributor cap and rotor appear to be fine (there was a small amount of build up on the terminals in the cap but all appeared to be normal). I've checked all fuses, electrical fuses in the cabin as well as the power fuses under the hood. The fuel pump runs until pressure is built up.
1. If I were to apply an ohm meter to the ignition cable, what resistance would be expected from a good cable? Is this a reliable method to test the continuity of the cable?
2. How would I test the power source for ignition coil for a short?
3. I have not cleaned the injector poppets but do not believe that this is the issue. (I would expect at least some fire and missing wouldn't I?) Could dirty injecors keep the engine from starting accutely?
4. Is it possible that there is an electrical short in the EFI system? How would I check?
5. Am I missing anything other source of the difficulty?
Signed, Frankly I'm Stumped (or Jody Woods for short).
