Question

I have a '98 Chevy Z71 4WD truck with semi-floating

Sent to Car Experts March 13, 2006 8:42 a.m.

I have a '98 Chevy Z71 4WD truck with semi-floating limited slip rear end. After rebuilding tranny, replacing torque converter twice, replacing plugs, wires, distributor cap & rotor, I still have the same problem. If under load, accelerating to 4,000 rpm in second gear before letting up enough so tranny will shift into third gear........as soon as it goes into third, it fills like the right rear tire is about to shake off the truck. I must almost stop to get it to quit; then under normal acceleration, it's OK. I have 180,000 miles on the truck. No one has found the problem. The other day, while the truck was up on a jack, I noticed there was considerable end play in the right rear axle (puxhing the tire in, then pulling it out); maybe 1/8" or more. I think this may be my problem, i.e., with the sudden drop in torque going from second gear to third (rpm's drop from 4,000 to below 2,000), the loose axle is "searching" for it's rightfull place. What do you think, and how much end play should I have?   I'm desperate!
