My truck is a 1997 GMC 1500. I just noticed an awful noise coming from what my father calls a "Dolly Wheel." I attempted to look up the part info on the internet and even called a parts store and they don't know what a "Dolly Wheel" is. It is located to the left of the air conditioning unit and the serpentine belt wraps around the front of it. I want to have it repaired, but don't want to risk the chance of driving it if it will cause more damage to the truck. I smell burning and sparks fly from it from time to time. If it isn't called the "dolly wheel", then what is it?

It's either an idler pully or the belt tensioner. It would most likely be the tensioner. This is a pic of the tensioner. Images available only to Customers.

Reply to Davo/diablo666's Post: The picture shown is not the part this is making the noise and sparking. It has little coils or wires inside of it and it is found on the left of the engine looking in.

Reply to Davo/diablo666's Post: The picture shown is not the part. It is to the left of the engine looking in and has coils or wires inside. It definitely provides tension to the belt, but it doesn't look like the picture. What is the average cost for both parts?
