Question

start power light spark turn starter gas ignition engine auto truck to

Sent to Car Experts September 16, 2005 10:48 p.m.

Ok...I guess I'll give you guys a try. I am at my wits end with my 85 toyota truck. 22r, carb, auto. Driving home one night from work the engine cut out. Thought it was the coil so I changed it, didn't work. I changed the ignitor, didn't work. I changed the ignition switch, didn't work. It has gas(can smell it), plugs, wires, cap, rotor, battery are all new. The entire distributor was replaced 5 years ago. The starter will try and turn the engine over but there is no spark. Light tester indicates power is getting to the coil, i'll try to start it 10 or 20 times with nothing then out of nowhere it actually starts. I am totally at a loss...maybe loose wire or something. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Sounds like a bad pickup coil in the distributor. It sends the ignitier an rpm signal to fire the coil.

Remove the distributor cap and ignition rotor.(1) Check the air gap between the timing rotor spoke and the pick-up coil. When aligned, the air gap should be 0.008-0.016 in.. You will probably have to bump the engine around with the starter to line up the timing rotor.(2) Unplug the distributor connector at the distributor. Connect one wire of the ohmmeter to the white wire, and one wire to the pink wire. The resistance of the signal generator should be 130-190รน.
