Question

'87 Toyota truck backfiring

Sent to Car Experts August 03, 2005 12:08 p.m.

I have az 1987 Toyota pick-up with a 22R engine. It has 168,000 miles and runs great.....unitil the other day. I was going down a hill in 3rd or 2nd gear and it started backfiring. It only backfires when I let of the gas. It will idel without backfiring. It has no problem starting. The backfiirng in VERY loud...like a bomb....If I keep the gas pedal down alittle, it will not backfire. There is also a black canister on the side of the enging compartment that was leaking gas out of the bootom hose. I put a bolt in it to staop the gas leak. I know that is probably not right but I didn't want to lose anymore gas.....HELP
I only paid $550.00 for the truck but I would like to keep it.
