Question

Chevy truck won't start!

Sent to Car Experts August 02, 2005 9:13 p.m.

1991 chevy c1500 driving fine. quit instantly! Cranks fine. Couldn't see any fuel at all in trottle body. Towed it home. Fuel pump running. Disconnected fuel line at TB plenty of fuel. Jumped ADAL and only flashed 12!Is there any way to check voltage at the fuel injectors? If I get a specified voltage then what? If no voltage then what? Is it the PCM? Where do you get the PROM as mentined in the Haynes manual. The manual also mentions a CALPAK (fuel??)

You can test the injecter signal by using a small bulb called a "noid" light. It will flash when the engine is cranked if both signals are arriving at the injecter. Here's what it looks like.

You can check for power using a regular testlight. It should have 12v to one side at all times when the key is on. The ground side is pulsed by the computer to fire the injecter. Don't try to test that with a regular testlight or you could damage the computer.

The PROM (program read only memory) is the personality for that particular car. I wouldn't suspect that though.

Thanks,
Where do I find this "Noid" light? Connect to where?
confused on the second part;

Based on the schematic both injectors are tied to ecm-1 mini fuse in the relay center under hood. I did check the fuse and it was ok. I think I understand, DUH!
Back to this "Noid" light???

Hope you didn't think I was coming back, but tried 4 places tonight looking for the NOID light. Guys thought I was a little nuts. Finally got one $7 for GM throttle bodies. Prior to using it I checked to see if I was getting 12VDC, OK on both connectors with the ignition on!
Plugged the NOID light in and cranked. NG!
Same with the other connector, NG!
Now what???

Just got back and had Linda crank- NO SPARK!!
Reason I didn't check at first-I replaced pugs, wires, Distributor cap and rotor about 300 miles or so ago and was running beautifully until it died.
Now what?

I looked for the CKP but it's not there. I checked the manual and unfourtunatly I have a 1991. According to the manual the ckp was used on 1996.
I checked the ingition coil and resistances where as shown. The rotor and cap look ok. NEXT???

If your truck doesn't use a crank sensor, then it has a pick up coil in the distributor instead to do the same job.

I just spent the last two hours trying to figure out this pick up coil. According to the manual the distributor needs to be removed. But you need to set it at TDC. Damper bolt like the manual shows is out in the open-yeah right. "simply turn with breaker bar until the mark is at zero. Can't get at or see anything. Finally after a gazzion up and down under the truck turning the damper bolt and back up looking at the rotor and ignition marks = TDC da, dah! Then spent 1/2 hour building a scafolding over the engine with two ladders and 2 x 4's so I can reach and see what I am doing so I can accuratly "mark" on the intake manifold the location of the distribtor. Saturday I will attempt to remove the ignition module. Of course all this and the manual says you can't check it so take it to a dealer - yeah right!. And after that, your remove the distribtor so you can take out and look at the pickup coil. Boy!! Of course I'll go through this only to find out the reason the truck wouldn't start was that the left rear tire was 1/2 pound low on air!!
Good night!!

Hi! Need to get a distribtor wrench-easier said than done. Went to Sears -only had 1/2"- needed a 9/16". Went to Advance Auto - just sent them all back yesterday-nobody buying them. Went to another Advance Auto. Got a cheap set(1/2" and 9/16"). There was a stud in the way - couldn't get wrench to seat fully on the distribtor nut. Had to "rearrange" wrench on the vise to fit. Lucky this cheap wrench was much smaller than the ones Sears might have have.
After much back and forth twisting got the distributor out. Checked the pickup coil resistance=infinte to ground and 824 Ohms between wires which according to the manual (500 to 1500) is ok. Manual says you can't check the ingition module. This appears to be the only thing left. Will this be it or something else????

ACCEPTED Check Mark

The ignition module is only responsible for spark. If you don't have injecter pulse either, there's something wrong with the circuit for the pick up coil. You really need a lab scope to check it.
