I have a 1997 Subaru Impreza wagon. I drove it on sat afternoon and it was fine it sat for about 3-4hrs and when I went to go drive it again all of a sudden it was very slow when I turned. Also when I was about at 30 miles per hr if I would just barely touch my brakes I would almost jerk back and forth. But if I didn't touch the brakes it was a little slow but not bad. The RPM's at about 50 MPH would reach a little over 4000. What could the problem be? Is it a transmission problem? Or is it maybe the anti-lock brakes are stuck on?

The emergency brake may be stuck on enough to cause a drag.Even though the brake lever is released, the cable can hang up,or develops a bur in the casing.

How much should it rufffly cost to have something like the emergancy brake to have fixed? Do they usually have to replace the entire brake? The timing belt has not been changed to our knowledge. We got the car with about 70,000 miles on it.

Sorry for the delay, electrical storm stole the electricity. The cost of the emergency brake depends on the problem, cable, lever, spring. How often is the emergency brake used? If you can get maintenance records, to verify the belt has been changed. The cost $ 200 to $350. the emergency brake,Left rear cable is $60, Right rear is $60 the front cable $20 Labor is 3.4 hours @ labor rate.Let me know. Reply to Paul's Post: What if the timing belt hasen't been changed? Would we be just better off selling off the car, and warning the new owners of its problems? The high mileage is why I ask. We have never owned a subaru other than this one, so I don't know how long they should last.
