help w/ bad tranny seal

93 subaru impreza1.8 all wheel dr.Where the 1/2 shaft goes into trany there is a seal. got the old one out but the new one wont go in at all, tried tapping a socket to press it in but it just wont go. there is a plate w/ nubs on it that surrounds the whole does that have to come off to get the new seal in? someone please help.
