Serpentine belt off on 2004 3.0L subaru outback

Sent to Car Experts October 01, 2006 6:51 p.m.

We have a 2004(3.0L) Sub Outback...the serpentine belt has come off. My husband is very handy. Can someone give us a diagram or walk us through putting it back on? It's Sunday & the 1st day of hunting season here in Central Oregon...HELP!!!! No mechanics are available until tomorrow. We need help NOW! The diagram in our manual is for the 2.5L...looks different than our configuration!
Thanks Jan

I'm giving you the instructions but you need to know, these things don't just fall off. There is something wrong with one of the pulleys to cause this and it will likely come off again.

REMOVAL

  1. Fit the tool to the belt tensioner mounting bolt.

Does it take a special tool or can we use a regular socket wrench? Our outback is a 2003 not 2004...does this make a difference? A rat got caught in the belt...when I started the car the force of the rat getting caught in the belt pulled it off. It is new & looks to be fine.

YUCK,

You can use a regular wrench but it's a pretty strong spring. That's where the long tool is very helpful. Use a long preaker bar and a socket if you can so you'll have more leverage..
