diagnosing bad catalytic converter

1993 Subaru loyale 4WD Sounds like a blockage in the exhaust system. Runs a little rough at idle but when accelerating engine you hear a baffling sound coming from the tailpipe. A bop bop bop sound as if there is a restriction in airflow in the exhaust system. You can rev through it but there is a definite loss of power.
