the transmission on my 2000 Subaru Forester
Sent to Car Experts May 05 11:37 AM

the transmission on my 2000 Subaru Forester sometimes slips, car just drifts backwards on a sloped road, when I put it into drive. Generally it works fine. Once an awhile it, in bumper to bumper traffic, will not engage for a second or so even though it has been in drive the whole time. Amny idea what the problem could be and how expensive it is to fix it?

Optional Information:

Already Tried:
nothing, except to wait for the transmission to engage once backed out of driveway

Hi there! This is a pretty common problem with the Subarus.First thing to do is make sure it's full of transmission fluid. If it is then it is likley the low clutch drum seal leaking internally.Very common,we usually replace the transmission with a reman or a used one.The labor to take the transmission apart and replace the seal is so expensive it is less expensive to have a used one installed.Hope this helps! Thanks

Reply to carguy1's Post: the answer doesn't make sense to me. The transmission is slipping rarely and usually only after backing out of a steep driveway. If I pause for a few seconds after backing out then it engages. It seems to me it is something with a worn area that interfaces with the engine, not a leak in the inner cylinder as described.
