why is my car starting only sometimes?

i have a 93 taurus wagon and it's always started up easy until 2 days ago when i got in and turned the key. nothing happened. so i waited until the next day to try to diagnose the problem and call a tow truck. i decided to try to start it up again lo and behold it started right up. I figured it may be a spark plug or something so i drove it to a auto parts store. when i walked out of the store the car wouldn't start. so i walked home and my friend gave me a ride this morning to go get the car towed, and it started again! i drove it all the way home with no problems, then when i went out 5 minutes later to test it it wouldn't start. it's confusing the hell outta me

When it doesn't start is the engine cranking but not starting or not cranking or even clicking? What size engine in your car?
