88 Ranger 2.9 V-6
If I swap out a cylinder head and remove the distributer marking the location, and not
moving the crank, could doing either of these things cause my vehicle to not start, the vehicle was still running with a cracked head. I have put a spark plug in the end of a wire and have spark , I also checked the fuel valve on the rail fuel did come out. the cylinder that I replaced the cracked head with came from a pull a part wrecking yard and was from the other side of the engine. the engine cranks but dosen't fire. The heads apear the same so I hope that it dosen't hurt to switch sides, it also has hydralic lifters. Any help would greatly be appreciated

It probably got nothing to do with the head you installed. under the worst of conditions it should still run! If you only changed one head you should still have enough compression on the good side to at least get it to run. it may run poor but is should still run. First thing I would do is check the compression in the engine. If thats fine, I would then check my timing. If you have fuel at the rail and spark at spark plugs.. the only thing that cause it not to spark is out of time.
