I have a 1997 Saturn SL1 5 Speed Manual Transmission ...

Sent to Car Experts September 05 12:46 PM

I have a 1997 Saturn SL1 5 Speed Manual Transmission with 180,000 miles on it. Original clutch and transmission. Recently it has become difficult to shift when the car is stopped and the engine ideling. Example: i push the clutch in and brake at a red light or stop sign. When i go to put it into 1st gear it is almost impossible. If I turn the engine off it moves just fine. If I happen to be in first gear when I stop it has a tendancy to jerk but not all the time. I took it to a dealer and they said they looked through a "view" of the clutch and it looked in great shape. At speed or when the car is moving it up shifts and downshifts just fine. Any ideas.

Does your clutch pedal feel okay? It doens't happen to feel soft or spongy at all?

Reply to BOBBY's Post: The clutch pedal feels firm with decent resistence. The pedal travel over the years has decreased some from where the clutch engaged when new until now but it is no where to the floor where I have had it on other cars.

Are you familiar with the clutch system on this vehicle. Do you happen to know where some of the parts are located?

Reply to BOBBY's Post: I am familiar with some aspects of this car and can locate the transmission and slave / master cyclinder if that is what it is called on this car but have very little access to lifting the car up to get underneath it.

Okay, what I want you to do is see if you can have somebody push on the clutch pedal and you can see how much the slave cylinder moves. Can you easily see the shaft of the slave cylinder?

Reply to BOBBY's Post: Unfortunatley the slave cylinder is under the battery / air intake and I cannot see it clearly but what I can see looks like it goes into the clutch housing and no moving parts viewable.
