2002 saturn alarm reset ...

Sent to Car Experts September 01, 2006 8:31 p.m.

2002 saturn alarm will not reset after changing battery in car. Battery post broke, not allowing me the ability to keep power on system while changing battery. Installed new car battery and can not reset alarm. Have removed horn fuse (Not a recommended way to drive car), but ararm is off. How can I reset remote to operate ararm properly?
Thank you
Dave

Optional Information:

Already Tried:
Put ignition key in accessory position 3 consecuitive times as instructed by dealer, did not work. Pressed one key on remote 3 consecuitive times as described by manual, tried all keys on remote in all different ways, did not work. Looked for valet button, have not found one. Stood on head, stuck out tongue, passed wind, still not working. Dealer absolutly no help. Local mechanics say they are sorry for me owning a Saturn. May target practice with 30-06. PLEASE ADVISE!!! With horn fuse in, hood shut, doors locked. Unlock door, alarm sounds very loud, alarm light off, insert key turn to on position, alarm sound off (no sound), alarm light is on. Start car, alarm light goes off. Car runs fine. May need 30-06 to ward off neighbors complainig.

Remote worked just fine before battery post broke. After replacing car battery, remote will not work. Checked battery in remote, ok, but replaced anyway. Remote will not work under any condition with alarm on car.

You may need to reprogramme the transmitter. Try this out.

Right from the FSM (Factory Service Manual)

To program the RKE module with a new transmitter, use the following instructions:

Have all the transmitters that will be programmed to the Saturn Present, even if only one is new.

1.Put your key in the ignition, and keep it in the OFF position.

2.Locate the DLC. It is fastened to bottom of the left side of trim panel under the steering column.

3.Use a jumper wire to provide a path from the RKE system program circuit (cavity 8) to ground (cavity 4). Use an available Saturn lead kit and splice, to create a jumper wire as shown. Grounding the program circuit causes the horn chirp. Count the number of horn chirps. The number of chirps will correspond to the mode the RKE module is in.
Obtain the desired mode number by referring to the Saturn Security System mode chart.
4.Cycle the ignition key the number of times that correspond to the desired mode, making sure the key ends up in the LOCK position after it is cycled.
The key must be in the LOCK position to program the module.
5.Keeping the program circuit grounded, simultaneously press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter.
The horn will chirp the number of times corresponding to the mode programmed when the process is completed, may take up to 15 seconds.
If there is no response, repeat this step, making sure both buttons are pressed down firmly.
If there is still no response, check the transmitter battery and battery contacts. If you are only programming the RKE module with one transmitter, proceed to step 7.
6.Still keeping the program circuit grounded, repeat step 5 with the next transmitter. You must not allow more than one minute between programming the transmitters, or the RKE module will exit programming mode and you will have to start over. If you accidentally disconnect the ground wire from the DLC before completing this step, you will have to start over at step 3. If you accidentally disconnect the ground wire from the DLC, after completing this step, only the first transmitter will be matched. If you make a mistake, start over at step 3.

7.Remove the jumper wire.
Test the operation of each transmitter with the Saturn.
Close the decklid or liftgate.

OK here goes..... The DLC on this vehicle is just below the hood release, if that is what a DLC is, this I believe is where a hand held device can be plugged into. It has 16 electrical slots, 8 horizontal above another 8 horizontal slots, none of which are numbered, but the outer parimeter looks to allow a device to be pluged into it in only one direction. Counting from left to right, slot #2 on top has a purple wire attached, slot #4 and #5 each have seperate black wires attached and the bottom row all the way to the right, slot #16 has an orange wire attached. There are only 4 wires attached to this plug in. Using DUMB logic, I placed a jumper wire from #4 to #16 and blew the fuse to the door locks, replaced fuse and all seems fine. I won't attempt another jumper wire until you say so. The only reference material I have ia a Haynes repair manual and it does not show this DLC for this model car and the wiring diagram in the back does not show a DLC either. I have studied your instructions, and mabe a jumper from the purple wire #2 slot to the black wire #4 slot may do the trick, but I won't attempt this unless you believe this is correct. There are no other slots, plug in's, or any other devices attached under the dash on either side of the car.
Please advise
Thank you
Dave

What is a body comp fuse and where is it located? I have checked every fuse I can locate, and all are in good condition. The only one I have found bad was the door lock fuse after I blew the thing and replaced it. Everything seems to be working fine, even the alarm system light on the dash, just the remote will not communicate with the car.

OK, If the door lock switch works then the body fuse is OK, uses the same fuse. Both remotes are dead right?, Have you tried every button on both?

Door lock switch works fine. We have only one remote and it worked fine before the battery in the car broke and was replaced. There are 4 buttons on the remote "lock" "unlock" panic and trunk, and yes we have tried every button in every possible combimation we know. The owners manual indicates to press any button 3 consecuitive times to auto sync. remote, but this too does not work. What next?

You need to try this first. Put key in the run position window down(so not to lock keys in car). Now hold remote less than 4 feet away from car and press the lock and unlock firmly. Does the remote work know?

Put key in ignition, put in run position, engine not running, put window down, pressed lock and unlock and panic and trunk button on remote seperatly numerous times, no response of any kind. Standing at drivers door while pressing buttons on remote, and moved to various locations around car close 1 to 4 feet from car. Pushed lock and unlock at same time for 15 seconds and released as another attempt, still no response of any kind. New battery in remote, removed and just now tested to be sure, battery new condition, and checked to be sure it is installed in remote correctly, still not response of any kind. Next?

To synchronize a transmitter with the BCM, Simultaneously press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter, for approximately 10 seconds, near the car. The door locks will cycle to confirm synchronization. Remember key in run and window down.

Well, You need to have the body computer scanned for codes. If no codes are present the body computer will need to be put in programming mode and that can only be done with a scan tool on the 2000 and up model years. If you know anyone with a scanner would be great. If not the dealer can scan them for you. I'll load the 30-06 "JUST KIDDING"

Do you know what model or type of scan tool I will need to program or check the codes?
The investment into this scanner will more than pay for itself knowing what shops or dealers charge to do this. I have never baucked at purchasing tools to do the job right.
