I have a 1993 Saturn manual transmission with 149K miles. The car has developed a "growl" when cold. The noise is most evident when turning the steering wheel to the left or when you hit a bump in the road. I have had both front wheel bearings replaced which were not the problem. The noise goes away after the car warms up. Could this be a clutch problem or a power steering problem? The noise does not appear to be wheel related because when I put the car in neutral and turn the engine off while traveling down the road I do not hear the noise. Also, when turning the wheel when coasting down the road with engine off I cannot hear the noise.
