Question

My 95 automatic saturn has recently started dying randomly.

Sent to Car Experts July 11, 2006 3:22 p.m.

My 95 automatic saturn has recently started dying randomly. The first sign is my cruise control or radio shuts off, then I have trouble accelorating, then my speedometer and odometer stop, followed by my rpms jumping around like crazy. turn signals, headlights, window movement, and windsheild wiper movement all cause the rpms to bounce as well. This has happened in stop and go traffic after a hour of running to free way after 15 minutes of running. The fuel pump relay gets very hot. This all happens within 1 minute, then the car will die and not turn over againfor a while

REPLIED Check Mark

It sounds like you have a problem in the alternator, possibly a short in it or something, if the regulator is bad in it, it may make your electrical components in the car short out or act funny. If the alternator is going bad, then it would make sense that when you use your electrical components in the car you make the RPMs jump around.

Since you have already replaced the battery, take it to a garage and have them check your alternatori output (preferably when it is acting up if possible) and see if it is putting out too many or too few volts.

It has been in an auto electric shop for 5 days and they did not find anything wrong at all. I believe they checked the alternator.
