1994 BMW 325 IS had a water pump and radiator replace by a local repair shop. Within one week the fan broke into pieces. The fan damaged the radiator so both were replaced. The radiator was not replaced correctly and then the fan broke again. The repair shop replaced the fan and it broke again 3 weeks later. Suspect it is hitting the fan shroud. Repair shop suggests that my son is abusing the engine by the way he excelerates, causing the motor to torque therefore move enough to make the fan hit the fan shroud. I think they have not installed the radiator and fan shroud correctly. This is the third time the fan had broken. Is it the mechanic, my son, or maybe the motor mounts, allowing more movement of the engine?

Hi,
Replace the water pump. The new pump threaded boss(for the fan) was machined not center. This usually always happens when a cheap aftermarket pump was installed. Be sure this time to install an OE BMW pump. There is a difference in cost so it would be fair for you to pay the difference in the part cost, But no you should not be responsible for the broken fan and radiator as this was not your fault. But of coarse with the age of your BMW a new radiator is beneficial. I have seen this many times, If however a Genuine BMW pump was installed then I would look into the matter further.
Please reply if you have any questions at all.
