My battery light is coming on and lights are dimming.what should i check first

You need to check your alternator. Put a digital voltmeter accross the battery with the engine running and no accessories on and you should see between 13.5 and 14.5 volts. If it's under 13 volts, you likely have a bad alternator, assuming the alternator fuse/fusable link is good.
