Question

Transmission problem

Sent to Car Experts September 14, 2006 3:12 p.m.

I have a 1983 300SD Turbo Diesel Mercedes. With no warning (yesterday) when I put it in drive it failed to engage. When I stepped on the accelerator the engine just raced. Finally, it did engage, but briefly would not shift into 3d gear and then into the highest gear. Then it started working again...particularly if I didn't accelerate rapidly. I checked the transmission fluid level and everything seems normal. What would be causing this? Can it be repaired or will I have to replace the transmission. If so, do you recommend buying rebuilt transmissions? How much would be a fair price (labor wise) to take the old one out and install a new transmission?
