Dodge Transmission
Sent to Car Experts August 16 10:26 AM

I have a 2002 Dodge Durango with a 5.9 and a 46RE transmission. I have added a auxillary stack plate cooler and a deeper trans pan. When I pull my trailer the trans temp gets up around 210 degrees. Normal operating temp is about 150 degrees. I thing the trans is slipping a bit when I tow and this is causing the rise in the temp. Is there a trans pac kit to bring the line pressure up and fix this problem and if so where do I get it.

Optional Information:
2002 Dodge Durango 5.9

Already Tried:
nothing other than the cooler and pan

Reply to Brian W.'s Post: The trailer is well within the 7300 pound towing capacity of the vehicle. I do not know what the line pressure is but I have a pressure gage to check this. I do not have any issues with the trans when not towing other than the shift points are a little short.

Last post you stated you had a pressure gauge to test line pressure, I did not recieve any results.

Usually lack of line pressure and a overheating trans is due to a faulty front pump. On our scan tool drb3 we have an option to moniter line pressure and desired line pressure, if the actual strays from the desired a reading must be taken. If pressure is actully low the pump and reaction shaft must be inspected and checked with a feeler gauge.

It sounds like you have a weak pump, that only becomes a problem under load.
