How do I change the coil packs on a 1987 4 cyl     Chev. Cavalier wagon?

  1. Remove coil retaining screws on 4-121/2.0L and V6-173 models or nuts on 4-151/2.5L models, then separate coils from module, Figs. 12 and 13.
  2. Connect coil
  3. Insert attaching nuts or screws as applicable, then torque to 40 inch lbs.

The coil pack is located on the rear of the engine (see the illustration below). It is not much fun to change, since it is hard to see let alone reach. If you do not like working blind with your fingertips in cramped locations, you may want to consider taking this particular job to your local garage to let them sweat and bleed, while you sit back in the shade with an iced tea and watch. (at least, i would if I had the choice!) <g>
