Based on your description of the problem I would have the drive belt for the compressor checked. I do not think that alone is the problem but the basics must be checked.
I would have the system checked for any leaks and have the system re-charged. Over the years, the system can lose Freon even though it is a closed system. The expansion and contraction of the lines sometimes add to that problem.
There could also be an electrical problem but that will be detected when the system is checked.
