Question

i just installed a new oil pan and oil pump on my 305.i ...

i just installed a new oil pan and oil pump on my 305.i went to go put the dipstick in and there is a soilid piece in the hole,but you can see that it does'nt cover up the whole hole.you can kinda see around it like it was just put in there.i was wanting to know if i should drill it and use an extractor to get it out.i'm just trying to avoid haveing to take the pan off again,but if i have to i will,but there was nothing sticking down in the pan on that area.its a 1978.thanks

Hi joel,

I really don't recommend it. There is a good chance that metal flakes from drilling, will get into the oil and crankcase. I personally would not chance it. If you do attempt to drill if you dip the drill bit in oil, the metal tend to stay on the bit.

brian shoul i take the pan off again and use a punch or a couple and try to knock it out from under neath it.joel

Can you use a punch and not knock it into the engine? Do you have any ideas what this solid piece could be metal, or gasket material?

No, it is better to take the pan off rather than compromise the main engine and rod bearings. Sorry.
