Should be at the base hinge of the clutch pedal.

Is it an exact number each time you try or is that an estimate?

Ok, it should be located in the steering column. Depending on the year of the vehicle will determin the look of the switch and the cost to replace it.

What year is the vehicle?

The transmission range sensor which controls the neutral safety switch, back up light etc. is located on top of the transmission. Here is a picture of the switch/sensor. It is component #2.
