Why won't a 1999 VW New Beetle shift into gear?

I have replaced the relay switch...you know how it works...when the car is in Park and you need to shift, you have to depress the brake pedal. Well...........being a woman and not knowing anything about cars, I had this relay replaced and it STILL WON'T SHIFT OUT OF PARK. HELP HELP HELPWhat else could it be???????? THANKS A MILLION!!!!!!!!!!!Optional Information: 1999 Volkswagen NEW BEETLE...Already Tried: REPLACING THE RELAY SWITCH

I believe there is a recall on this although I can't find it right now.Did you try pumping the brake a few times?Did you replace the relay or have it replaced?If you look up under the dash(Shroud removed) at the top of the brake pedal you will see the switch with a wire harness connector.(Make sure the switch plunger is popping out of the switch when the pedal is pushed away from this switch)Then Unplug it,start the car,shut it off ,plug it back in and restart the car and try to shift.Let me know what you find out here.
