rear diff. problems

I'm working on a 1980 chevy k10 with a 12 bolt rearend. I have to change the axle bearings on the driver side. I took the cover off and took the lock screw out. Is the pinion shaft supposed to fall out or should I have to beat it out? I urgently await your reply. thank you
