My 91 LeSabre check engine light came on after the battery went dead. I had the engine put on the computer and the sensor on the cam came up as being bad. It did''nt say which one so I changed the external sensor first and the light stayed on. I read an article that said that if the internal magnet on the cam fell off and the engine still ran don''t worry about it. The engine still ran great up until last week. The car had about 1/4 tank of gas and it started sputtering and shutting down on my wife as she was driving. I told her to get some gas as she may have gotten some bad gas that day. She did and it ran good again. She kept 1/2 tank of gas and it started sputtering again. I did change the fuel filter under the frame about 6 weeks ago. When I emptied the gas out of the old filter it had some black sediment in it. Is it possible the strainer could be blocked in the tank or do I need to change the filter again?Today she added gas to 3/4 and it ran good again. What do you think it is?

Optional Information:
1991 Buick LeSabre V6

Already Tried:
Changed fuel filter, replaced external cam sensor, added dry gas to remove any water.

Hi,if it runs well when you add fuel, the problem is in the pick up tube on the electric fuel pump in the tank, there is a rubber line that connects the pump to the out et tube,it may also have a pulsater in that line,if the hose or pulsater develops a leak, when the level drops below the leaking level, air will be sucked in to the line and the engine will starve for fuel. Sending iillustrations showing the problem area. It would be best to drop the tank and replace the fuel pump as an assembly,if the tank seems to have sediment inside, it would be best to have it cleaned,a radiator shop will clean it for you. Thanks Jerry.

Reply to Roadside Jerry's Post: Jerry, after I sent the first info, I called my wife,(I was in New Mexico when I sent it, she's in Fl.)she said it still was sputtering. She also said that it does it at high & low speeds, and when she takes her foot off of the gas it would stall.Would the hose still be the problem, or could it be something else?
