What would cause a cruise control to not automatically kickdown into a lower gear when necessary? Otherwise it operates fine, I just need to press the accelerator to get it to kickdown, then once the correct speed is attained the cruise control returns to drive or overdrive.

 The cruise control will automattically apply as much throttle that's required to maintain the correct speed. It's possible it just doesn't need to correct that quickly.
